Explore the Karamojong way of life : The Karamojong people migrated into Uganda around the 1600 from Ethiopia and settled around Moroto mountain and they are believed to be semi nomadic pastoralists who live in northern part of Uganda and the word Karimojong means the old one who stayed behind and it originated from the phase ekar ngimojong which means that the old men can walk. Presently they leave in the Moroto, Abim, Kotido, kaabong and they speak Karamojong as their language.

Culture and tradition of Karamojong

The are mainly cattle keepers and they are one of the strong cultural belief, crop cultivation is another thing that they do because of the fertile soils which makes it the best rural tourism destination in Uganda. Karamoja does not get a lot of visitors but you visit it you will not regret because you will experience some thing that is rarely seen and in other parts of the world. The women’s role in Karamoja is stay home and take care of their children with husbands, during marriage dowry is so much important in Karamoja region and it is paid inform of cows if you cannot manage then you can not take any girl from Karamoja.

Like any other tribe in Uganda Karamojong’s are also led by the clan elders who make decisions and they are followed in order to keep the culture, many things in Karamoja are done communally and most of the things are shared like food, cattle and water for their cattle plus their food, so visitors will enjoy things like milk mixed with blood from cattle which they get after spearing the cows neck and they locally call Ekyalakanu, they also use the hides to make blankets and clothes and then the urine of cows is used to build their grass hatched houses.

Social life and organization of Karamojong people

The Karamojong are socially organized and they are ruled by a group of elders who rule till it is time to hand over to the nest leader and ruling is according to generation to avoid conflicts. Karamojong’s are anti-social people to other tribes but social themselves. In Karamoja for one to be counted as a man you have to wrestle for the woman you want to marry and if you fail to win your considered less a man and therefore not allowed to marry from Karamoja but can marry from other tribes but the wrestling match is to show that you can take care of the family and their property in case of anything.

It is easy to identify Karamojong like in dressing they kinder dress like the Masai people for men and women they put on metallic bands tied around their ankles, religiously, political, social Karamojong resolve around their culture.

Best time to visit Karamoja

Best time to experience Karamoja region is during the dry season in the months of June, September and December to February, during these months the travel conditions are favourable allowing visitors to experience large community celebrations.

Birding is also in done in kidepo and it is a home of over 475 bird species and some of these birds include Egyptian vultures, ostriches, to mention but a few.

How to get to karamoja

By road

Karamoja can be accessed by road that is from Kampala via mbale, Gulu and it is about 8 to 12 hours.

By air

For those who are not interested in in sitting for long hours one can schedule chattered flights from Kampala to Moroto airstrip then transfer to Karamo regions with a car.
