Lake Kivu Rwanda
Lake Kivu Rwanda : Lake Kivu in Rwanda is a surreal, scenic and unique lake in the Albertine Rift that is on the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda.
The lake covers an area of approximately 2,700 square kilometers (1,042 sq mi) and has a maximum depth of about 480 meters (1,575 ft).
Lake Kivu contains high concentrations of methane and carbon dioxide; these substances are extracted and are used for energy sources. The lake’s numerous deep-water springs provide unique habitats for aquatic life and the different islands and bays give beautiful scenery and great chances of boat tours.
The biggest economic activity done at the lake is fishing and it’s a major source of income for the communities around. And the most common fish is Nile tilapia, sardines, and lake sardines.
The tourism activities done at the lake include but are not limited to:- boat rides to enjoy the fresh waters and see the different islands and bays, sport fishing, hiking and trekking the congo trail plus the surrounding hills, different water sport like like kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and many more. You can also use your time to explore the local communities and engage in the fish trade that is very prominent in that area. Lake Kivu is a great point for relaxing on the beach.
Lake Kivu is very close to Volcanoes National Park, Gisenyi town, and hot springs; so people usually combine a visit to the lake with a safari to either of those places or all; depending on how much time you have in Rwanda.
While at the Lake you need to follow all the instructions as shared with you by the management and your tour guide and tour operator. Being close to the water, you need to also be aware of the risks of waterborne diseases and insect borne diseases and others and take necessary precautions.
You should also be respectful to the communities around because Lake Kivu holds spiritual and cultural importance to the local people and communities around. It played a very important role in the development and growth of the regional trade and migration.
Lake Kivu has several parts of the lake and surrounding areas are protected as national reserves. So be extra mindful as you explore the places not to damage them and get into trouble.
That said lake Kivu has challenges of environmental threats though continued conservation efforts are always being done to protect the lake.
You can easily access Lake Kivu, from Kigali by road, but you can also fly to the Lake using the nearby airports in Gisenyi and Kamembe.
The areas around the lake have great accommodation facilities; that fit in everyone’s budget from luxury resorts, mid-range hotels, lodges and budget friendly guesthouses, home stays facilities etc.
Food is served at your accommodation facility, and it’s usually cuisines or al carte menus that include all the al carte foods or the traditional Rwandan dishes that include umutsima (cassava and cornbread) and isombe (cassava leaves). The tradition Rwandan dishes come with local drinks like the banana beer, Rwandan tea or Rwandan Coffee.
You can also plan to visit Lake Kivu during the annual Lake Kivu Festival, where you engage in several traditional activities, dances, food galas and you really get to interact with the local communities. The festival is used to celebrate Rwanda and the region’s local culture, music, and arts.
