Mount Rwenzori National Park

Mount Rwenzori National Park is one of Uganda Safari Destinations that attracts many travelers for specifically hiking safari tours.

Mount Rwenzori National Park is located on the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The mountain ranges support the glaciers which are part of the Nile River. Mount Rwenzori National park is located in the same range as the Virunga National park.

The mountain sits on an area of about 130 kilometers long and 70 kilometers wide. The park consists of six massifs which are separated by deep gorges which include Mount Baker, Mount Speke, Mount Emin, Mount Gessi, Mount Luigi di Savoia, Mount Stanley, and Margherita peak which is the highest point on the mountain.

Mount Rwenzori national park’s vegetation cover which ranges from tropical rainforest through Alpine Meadows, There species and varieties of tall heather which is covered on the peaks.

Mount Rwenzori is a world heritage site which is located in the south western part of Uganda, near the Virunga National park in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Uganda.

Birding can be done in Mount Rwenzori National Park because it has a number of birds such as the Sunbirds, Robins, Barbets, and more than 300 bird species in the Rwenzori mountain National park. Other bird species include black Eagles, Owls, Rwenzori Turaco, bearded vultures.

You can engage in the cultural encounter once you visit Mount Rwenzori National Park. Enjoy the cultural experience as you visit the Rwenzori Mountains, to discover the farming village of Ruboni, home to over 2050 Bakonzo that are located in the foothills of the Rwenzori. You will learn about their daily life starting from caring for animals. You will meet the blacksmiths, storytellers, healers, basket weavers, music dance and drama acts.

You will as well be led to rocky Mubuku River. Ruboni is a local word which means clear clean water, this is because there was a clear stream that used to pass through villages, woods, and crops.

There is also the Bulemba Ihandiro culture Trail which takes over 7 hours of walking distance through the valley, and as you enjoy the cultural sites of the Bakonzo tribes.

You can enjoy the walk with the local guide through the forest to view a number of bird species in the forest such as the sunbirds, bee-eaters, primates like the black and white colobus monkeys.

During the walk have a chance to visit the traditional healers, learn about the local community, how they heal using the local herbs and other cultural encounters.

You can visit the Rwenzururu putting on the traditional dress of the historical and culture of the people of Rwenzori regions.

Nature Walks and Hiking in Rwenzori; there are different trails including the Buraco chimp forest, Lake Mahoma, walk through the Kichwamba trail, Bundibugyo, Karangura through the trails of Bwamba.

When visiting the amazing Mount Rwenzori National Park, you can have a chance to view the snow-capped Margherita peak with great views. You can also have great sightings, of vervet monkeys, Squirrels, chameleons and many more.

You can also visit the Bwamba which was built in 1938 and links to Fort Portal to the remote area of Bundibugyo direct to the route between the settlements which is 1600m the steep north. The Rwenzori ridge is commonly known as the Bwamba pass.

The Kilembe trail is located in the southern slopes of the Rwenzori from the trailhead at Kilembe which is near the town of Kasese. The trail route is along the Nyamwamba Valley through the central circuit at Lake Kitandara and Glacier Lake. The route is very standard with great views of Mount Baker.

There are a number of accommodation facilities around the park and these include Margherita hotel which is located 4km west of the town to Kilembe, New saad Hotel, located in Kasese town, Rwenzori Mountain Service Bunkhouse, its located next to the National park headquarters of Rwenzori Mountains National park, Rwenzori international hotel is 3km from town, White House hotel is located in Kasese town, Fort Motel, Ataco lodge has 9 cottages just outside Kasese town, Kluge Guest farm, is located 5km from the junction from Fort Portal, Hotel Cornerstone is located in Fort Portal town one of the modern facilities which is self-contained, the hotel is a guest lounge with its own restaurant, Palace Motel is located on plot 33 Muzosi Road Fort Portal-Nayaika Road, Rujuna Guest house-its located 6km outside the Fort Portal, located just 340meters from King Oyo’s Palace, Rwenzori   view guest house, located at the lower part of Kakilizaro road, Rwenzori travelers Inn is located just 16 Kyebambe roads, in the central area of Kasese town and Fort portal.
